Under city nights throughout City Heights we’ve been in search of a place… A place where people grow ideas into actions… actions where everybody is made to feel like A Somebody.
The spot where first dates get a chance to lead to love, where conversations weave in and out of intelligence, and the culture of the community is sewed into the menu.
The place kids can go while growing up and come back to for rides down memory lane… where immigrants, refugees, and people of all kinds chillax at ease while their hearts hang glide over open minds, open dances, open mics, and open nights.
We didn’t find it…
And in the spirit of when you “Want Something Done” @Oddisee, Soul Brotha Los stepped to me smile half-bent fresh out of @SLP (Startup Leadership Program). Reeking of fresh growth and mental hard work, he broke down the haps at the meeting and the need to not only be talking his truth, but the need to be moonwalking it to the next level.
We took two steps back to reflect and the path appeared in a flash, culminating a lifetime of hard work. We put our best foot forward marking that night the Grand Opening of the DOJO… The vision opened in our mind, and the brush strokes of a team’s hard work will soon to be evident on the canvas of City Heights.
We aim to fill in its potholes of safe spaces with civic engagement and colorful examples of people of all kinds, ages, ethnicities and minds. Further, we aim to shake down fault lines of separation, divisiveness, and marginalization with the help of the community expressing themselves artistically, traditionally, and culturally, via ongoing live streamed events.
