“Tell me and I may forget, teach me and I may remember, INVOLVE ME, and I learn”
At our Grand Opening on October 21st, Kyle Mitchell stepped up, spoke up, and expressed his interest in starting an internship at the DOJO Cafe. I told him don’t talk about it, be about it. And when he strolled up to The DOJO for his first day, he proved he was about it. He organized a meeting of the necessary minds and met us right in the middle. That middle was yesterday, November 14th, 2017 and from it, intend to walk together toward the edges of greatness learning both from each other and from the colorful fabric of City Heights.
Kyle is a student at the San Diego Metropolitan Regional, Career, and Technical High School (Commonly known as “The Met”). It’s a public, innovative, student-centered school in the San Diego Unified School District, and part of the Big Picture Learning network (http://www.bigpicture.org). His initial questions were in regards to the formation of partnerships and how businesses get started.
He couldn’t have started on a better day; we were hosting our City Heights Economic Development Collaborative (CHEDC) meeting and he had the opportunity to sit in and take notes. CHEDC is a group made up of local non-profit partners who are dedicated to strengthening underserved neighborhoods in City Heights through revitalization, branding, and business development. Their shared mission is to create and build upon economic development initiatives that will lead to building sustainable local communities.
Afterwards, Luis Ojeda, Business Development Officer of the Economic Development Department for the City of San Diego went the mile with us regarding Kyle’s questions pertaining to the steps needed to open a business. We both learned a lot of new information (Zoning/Permit resources for example: https://business.sandiego.gov) and are appreciative to him taking the extra time to go the extra mile to give back.
All in all, it was a great day in City Heights and a great day The DOJO Cafe! We are proud of Kyle for stepping up and getting involved in efforts to learn. We look forward to growing together through Coffee, Culture, and Community… and also to that homework he was assigned!
